history of Veterans Day

Veterans Day is an annual United States holiday honoring military veterans. A federal holiday, it is observed on November 11. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

The holiday is commonly printed as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day in calendars and advertisements. While these spellings are grammatically acceptable, the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling.

The U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with lots of pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

The United States Congress passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926, requesting that the President (Calvin Coolidge) issue another proclamation to observe November 11 with appropriate ceremonies. An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday; "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'."

In 1953, an Emporia, Kansas shoe store owner named Alfred King had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who served in World War I. King had been actively involved with the American War Dads during World War II. He began a campaign to turn Armistice Day into "All" Veterans Day. The Emporia Chamber of Commerce took up the cause after determining that 90% of Emporia merchants as well as the Board of Education supported closing their doors on November 11 to honor veterans. With the help of then-U.S. Rep. Ed Rees, also from Emporia, a bill for the holiday was pushed through Congress. President Dwight Eisenhower signed it into law on May 26, 1954.

Congress amended this act on June 1, 1954, replacing "Armistice" with Veterans, and it has been known as Veterans Day since.

Although originally scheduled for celebration on November 11 of every year, starting in 1971 in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. In 1978 it was moved back to its original celebration on November 11. Since this change, there has been a trend against being closed on the holiday. It began with businesses (excluding banks) and in recent years some schools and local governments have also chosen to remain open.[citation needed]

Rare New Guinea Singing Dogs Discovered in Pennsylvania

New Guinea Singing Dog is the name of an ancient, rare type of primitive canine that once inhabited all of the island of New Guinea. [wiki]

Why are they called singing dogs? Listen

Until one month ago, only 150 were known to exist in captivity -- most of those in world zoos. But last month, in a small town west of Harrisburg, Pa., about 80 of these unique dogs were discovered living with a hoarder. Randy A. Hammond, 58, obtained his first two NGSD at an Ohio flea market in 1995. A man gave him another pair shortly thereafter, and all the dogs found at his property are descendants from those two pairings of singing dogs.

Do's and Dont's on Facebook

10 commandments of Facebook

Wonder how much of personal information is fine on Facebook? Well, an expert tells you the dos and don'ts of being a part of the social networking giant.

Dave Whitelegg said that although Facebook is a fun way to keep in touch with friends and family, it can also be dangerous.
"Posting certain photos or information on the site puts you at risk of being fired, a victim of crime, or even worse. There are computer programmes called 'data mining' that sweep Facebook to collect dates of birth, phone numbers, addresses etc. That's gold dust to criminals," the Sun quoted Whitelegg, an IT security expert, as saying.
Here are the 10 things you should never post on Facebook and why.

Date and place of birth- This places you at massive risk of identity theft. They are the most commonly used security questions on password resetting sites.

Mother's maiden name-A lot of sites use your mother's maiden name to authenticate who you are. They also commonly use the school you went to as a security question.

Address- It again puts you at risk from identity fraud, but also from burglars and stalkers.

Holidays-If you post an update on Facebook saying: "Can't wait till next Wednesday - two weeks in Miami yeh!" you are basically saying: "Come and rob me."

Short trips from home-Again, this can put you at risk of burglary and stalking.

Inappropriate photos- Don't post racy, illicit, offensive or incriminating photos. Bosses and prospective employers are increasingly looking at Facebook pages.

Confessionals-These can also get you fired or haunt you for the rest of your life. Posting you are skiving work, who you are sleeping with, or doing something shameful is just dumb.

Phone number-Unless you want to be bombarded with unsolicited phone calls from people trying to sell you something - don't.

Children's names-These can be used by identity fraudsters or, more sinisterly, by paedophiles. It is much easier to steal a child's identity. An adult will eventually discover something is wrong by, for example, their credit rating being affected. Children won't.

Don't post a full public profile-It won't just exist on Facebook, it will go on any internet search such as Google. Only give the bare bones such as a name. Keep everything else private.

Show Your Local Animal Shelter Some Love

National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is Nov. 7-13, 2010

The Humane Society of the United States' National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is a way to honor animal shelters and their dedicated staff across the country.

There are approximately 4,000 animal shelters across the U.S., available to serve the estimated 6-8 million homeless animals who seek refuge each year. While 63 percent of American households include pets, only 10 percent of owned dogs and 18 percent of owned cats are adopted from animal shelters.

Spread the word about animals waiting to be adopted, and celebrate the many services provided by your local animal shelter.

Google to speed up searches with visual Web site ‘previews’

Google’s search engine has a new feature that may cause Web surfers to do less…Web surfing.

The company’s new Instant Previews announced on Tuesday provides visual snapshots of Web pages directly within the list of search results, making it easier and quicker to home in on the Web page you’re looking for.

Instant Previews, which will be rolled out during the next few days, puts a small icon of a magnifying glass next to most of Google’s search results. Click on the magnifying glass and Google serves up a screenshot of the Web page, highlighting the section of the page that’s relevant to your search query.GOOGInstantPreview

That eliminates the time-consuming back-and-forth excursions from Google’s list of search results to various Web sites.

Google says the majority of the preview snapshots are already stored in its index of the Web, and Google will pre-load the preview images for search results in your browser in the background. Result: preview images typically load in less than one-tenth of a second, says Google.

The previews represent the latest step in Google’s efforts to find new ways to accelerate Web searches, following September’s introduction of Google Instant, which predicts a search query and fetches the relevant list of results before you finish typing.

It will be interesting to see to what extent data-heavy new features like Instant Previews add to Google’s infrastructure spending – Google’s capital expenditures in the third quarter jumped to $757 million compared to $476 million in the second quarter and $239 million in the first quarter.

The new features comes as competition in the search market continues to heat up, with Microsoft offering new features in its Bing search engine, such as Facebook content.

Last week, a company called Blekko unveiled a new search engine that filters out the morass of spam-like sites designed to appear at the top of Google search results, delivering a more limited, but the company claims more relevant, set of results.

That kind of exclusionary approach to search probably couldn’t fly at Google, which has faced regulatory scrutiny over its power to control which Web sites get top billing in search results. But by letting users quickly flip through screenshots of websites, without wasting time loading each page in a browser, Google may be offering its own way for users to circumvent the clutter of unwanted Web sites.

Yoga For Back Pain

How to Perform this Low Back Pain Exercise

Take note that this is just one exercise explained in McKenzie's book, "7 Steps to a Pain-Free Life." For more detailed explanations and other exercises, I highly recommend reading his book. It is an excellent resource and something you will find yourself loaning out to your friends.Position One - Lying on your stomach
Lay on your stomach with your arms at your side and your head turned to one side. Stay in this position for 2-3 minutes and try to completely relax.
Position Two - Propping yourself on your elbows
Next prop yourself up on your elbows resting under your shoulders. If you feel sharp pain, move your elbows further away from your shoulders to a point where your pain subsides. If it does not subside, do not continue with the exercise.
Position Three - Press Up Exercise
Lay on your stomach again with your head turned to one side. But, this time position your hands palm down underneath your shoulders. Straighten your elbows as far as your pain permits. Try to keep your hips relaxed and in contact with the ground so that you are arching your back. Hold 1-2 seconds.
Repeat the exercise with each time trying to go a little further until your arms are completely straight and your elbows locked.
