Facebook to Change How You Process Friend Requests

On Facebook, you have two options for processing friend requests — confirm or ignore. Today, we’re learning that Facebook is replacing the “Ignore” button with a “Not Now” button, that when clicked, will place the friend request in a separate section called “Hidden Requests.”

Inside Facebook was first to report on the new “Not Now” option, and Facebook (Facebook) has since confirmed that it is indeed replacing the current “Ignore” option for all members and will be rolling it out to everyone in the next few days.

The “Not Now” alternation will change how you process friend requests moving forward. You can continue to confirm requests as usual, but if you’re not interested in friending a wannabe connection, you’ll now need to click the “Not Now” button. That action will not ignore the request, but hide it, relegating it instead to a new “Hidden Requests” menu for future processing.

“If you choose ‘Not Now’, the other person will never be notified that you have hidden their request and you’ll have the option to take action on it at some time in the future if you want to. Their request will remain in a pending state, meaning they won’t see the option to add you as a friend. They will just see the ‘Awaiting Friend Confirmation’ text as if you hadn’t taken any action on the request at all,” says a spokesperson for the company.

You can return to the “Hidden Requests” menu to revisit all requests you previously marked “Not Now,” and can then either choose “Confirm” or “Delete Request.” Should you delete the request, you can also optionally mark that you don’t know the person in question, and that behavior will block the individual from requesting your friendship in the future.

Facebook wants members to take advantage of the latter option to prevent friend request abuse. “This helps our systems get better at detecting unwanted behavior on the site and we can use that information to prevent abuse from that person in the future,” says the Facebook representative.

For most of us, the new “Not Now” option will be a welcome change that should go a long way in helping us process requests a bit faster. Removing requests completely, however, is a tad more complicated and now takes two additional steps.

Will you be welcoming the “Not Now” button with open arms or were you happy with the “Ignore” option? Share your thoughts on the pending change in the comments.

Normally, I don't like orange. Not at all!
But... there's always a but! Mine is Marc Jacobs.
In his Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2011 Collection,
which he presented on New York Fashion Week,
he combines orange with olive and I really like it.
Even if I'm not sure yet,
if I'll really buy any orange piece for next spring ;)
This one is only for inspiration. Once...

Here Comes the New Twitter

Twitter (Twitter) has announced  that it’s rolling out a new version of its web interface. Some users will start seeing the new look as soon as tonight, though the company says on its blog that it “will roll out as a preview over the next several weeks.”

News (news) of the company’s plan to integrate multimedia into the stream leaked out earlier this afternoon, but we’ve now learned that the redesign goes much further than that. The new interface resembles that of a far more sophisticated web app (as well as Twitter’s recently released iPad app).

The multimedia partnerships we hinted at earlier today extend to 16 different companies: DailyBooth, DeviantART (deviantART), Etsy, Flickr (Flickr), Justin.TV (Justin.tv), Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo (Twitgoo), TwitPic (Twitpic), TwitVid (TwitVid.com), Ustream (ustream), Vimeo (Vimeo), yfrog, and YouTube (YouTube).

Much has been made in recent months of Twitter’s move into areas previously owned by third-party applications. Today’s announcement will no doubt renew such discussion, with many of the best features of Twitter clients like Tweetie (tweetie), Seesmic (Seesmic) Desktop, and TweetDeck (TweetDeck) now becoming a part of the default Twitter interface. As we also pointed out earlier this afternoon, it also makes Twitter feel a bit more like Facebook.

Twitter CEO Evan Williams prefaced his announcement by mentioning that Twitter.com is already far and away the most popular way for accessing the microblogging service, commanding 78% of unique users (which the company defines as “Of all the people who logged into their Twitter account during the month, what percentage did so via each service.”). Combined with Twitter’s growing need to serve up impressions to advertisers, it’s certainly no surprise that the company is now looking to keep people more engaged on its website.

Cellphone Hazards

Dos and Dont's

  • Use landlines instead of mobiles wherever possible.
  • Don't use a cellphone if the signal is weak-that's when they shoot out more radiation.
  • Talk less, text more; invest in a hands-free kit.
  • Opt for a low SAR (specific absorption rate) phone and avoid sleeping with it.
  • Children below eight should not be allowed to use mobile phones except in emergencies.
  • It's difficult, but try not to use a cellphone for more than one-two minutes at a stretch.
  • Try to live away from a cell phone tower-ideally more than five km away.
7 Reasons Why You Should Worry

The data is mixed and experts differ. But there's growing concern that the ubiquitous wireless technology has the potential to become the next public health disaster.

Heating trouble
Cellphones generate heat and these radiofrequencies are absorbed mostly by the head and neck. Heavy use increases the risk of raised cellular, tissue as well as body temperature.

Pregnancy and fertility

Pregnant women more likely to have children with problems. Cellphones can affect male fertility, too.

Genetic danger
Cellphone and cellphone tower radiation stress cells, releasing DNA-damaging free radicals and stress proteins that can cause degenerative brain damage like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or Multiple Sclerosis.

Sleep disordersMay activate brain's stress system; make people more alert, bring down the ability to wind down and reduce sleep.

Children run a greater risk
With their developing nervous system, growing tissues, thinner skulls, children run a greater risk of energy absorption. It can lead to memory loss, inability to learn and behavioural issues.

Long-term effects
Over 10 years of heavy cellphone use can double the risk of brain cancer and up the risk of ear tumours by four times. Long-term use, especially on one ear, may damage tissues in the inner ear and lead to deafness.

Cancer and tumours
Some researchers hold that radiofrequency fields are tumour initiators or they increase the uptake of carcinogens in cells. The World Health Organisation Interphone study in 2008 suggested a connection between long-term use and three types of tumours: glioma, cancer of the parotid (a salivary gland near the ear) and acoustic neuroma (a tumour that occurs where the ear meets the brain).

--7 hours of talk time a week and 56 messages on average. That's how badly hooked metro indians are to cellphones.
